Description

Ages: 18 - Adult. Are you looking to get more out of your performance experience? Join us for UMS 101! This 90-minute workshop focuses on an upcoming UMS performance. Facilitated by professional, community-based practicing artists/educators, UMS 101 workshops offer background and contextual learning, live demonstrations, and participatory activities in a fun, casual environment. Each workshop is tailored with audience members in mind and is ideal for individuals seeking to familiarize themselves with or deepen their understanding of the presented art genre and performing artist. All UMS 101 workshops take place at Cahoots in Downtown Ann Arbor located at 206 E Huron Street. All corresponding performances take place at Hill Auditorium located at 825 N. University. See ‘Notes’ below for more details. Scholarship recipients receive a $10 discount and seniors a $4 discount. Instructor: UMS Staff. 1 class.

UMS 101: We Came to Step, complements UMS’s presentation of Step Afrika! on Sunday, March 12. Familiarize yourself with and deepen your understanding of stepping tradition. Facilitated by Jack Williams III, this UMS 101 will offer background and contextual learning, live demonstrations, and participatory activities in a fun, casual environment.

Step Afrika! integrates song, dance, storytelling, humor, and audience participation in highlighting the importance of stepping in cultural identity and the use of body percussion as a means of communication. Immerse yourself in the world of stepping and learn some of the signature styles.

Corresponding Performance: Sunday, March 12, 2023, 4:00pm, Hill Auditorium.

Rec & Ed classes follow AAPS COVID & Health Guidance.

Residents in the AAPS district boundaries ages 65+ are eligible for a discount on one class per term. Registration must be completed over the phone (734) 994-2300 ext. 0, Monday-Friday between 8am-5pm.
