Description:

Central Virginia Beekeepers Association will present a County sponsored course providing the necessary foundation to new or prospective beekeepers in the science and practice of keeping honey bees. Topics will include bee biology, equipment, setting up a hive, seasonal management, disease and pest prevention and much more. Experienced beekeepers will instruct on how to keep hives healthy and sustainable in order to preserve this valuable resource and investment. Outdoor small group sessions will supplement each topic. Enrollment includes 1- year membership in CVBA, opportunities for fieldwork as well an experienced mentor if requested. The course requires a copy of The Beekeepers Handbook, 5th ed. by Diana Sammataro which may be purchased locally or online. This book is the responsibility of the student and should be acquired before the start of the class. There will be a reading assignment to complete before the first class. Cost is $30. Additionally, we highly suggest A Field Guide to Honey Bees and Their Maladies - Penn State Field Guide by Maryann Frazier that may be purchased in class. Cost $10
