OPENING KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

Disrupting Bias to Promote Racial Equity in Early Childhood and Beyond
Dr. Rosemarie Allen

Participants will engage in discussions related to key social justice issues that impact how we lead, serve, and interact with others. Implicit bias, antiracist strategies, racial trauma and how it manifests in educational spaces will be presented. Daily acts of bias in schools and classrooms will be discussed as barriers to addressing racial equity. Strategies will be offered for identifying and responding to bias at the personal and interpersonal levels. The school to prison pipeline will be illustrated and defined with an emphasis on techniques to disrupt and dismantle this pipeline that begins in infancy.

AFTERNOON KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

Fostering H.O.P.E. for All Children
Shauna King
When we allow our own attitudes, feelings, stereotypes, or beliefs to influence our judgment or understanding of others, we are engaging in implicit bias. Biases are frequently based on stereotypes rather than actual knowledge of a person or situation. Such cognitive shortcuts, whether positive or negative, can lead to prejudgments that lead to rash decisions or discriminatory practices. This session provides a foundational understanding of how bias influences decision-making even when working with children and families and strategies to disrupt it.

In addition to the keynote presentations, please choose two breakout sessions. To view session descriptions please click HERE.
