In this two-day workshop, our focus will be on capturing the expressive energy of furry, scaly, and feathered creatures through the bust format (shoulders, neck, and head). Whether your inspiration leans towards realism, the magical and mysterious, or the cute and cuddly, we'll explore the narrative and symbolic potential of animal-themed art.
Led by Krista, you'll learn her coil-slab hand-building technique for hollow construction, gaining insights into sculpting animal gestures, facial features, fur, and textures. Participants are encouraged to bring printed images or tablets to display multiple views of their chosen animal for reference.
Color and glaze treatments for finishing your sculpture will be discussed, with students completing their pieces independently. The workshop fee includes a measure of low-fire 105 clay.
Join Krista to create a 9" - 11" tall animal bust filled with personality, exploring techniques to enhance texture and increase volume as you push, pull, and layer the clay surface to define facial features, fur and feathers. This workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to animal bust creation, including discussions on techniques for adding narrative depth.
Class #1:
We will take a methodical approach to building, starting with the neck and shoulders and progressing upwards to the nose.
Class #2"
We will focus on refining the mouth, eyes and ears, and experimenting with fur, concentrating on the top half of the animal bust.
Some hand building experience is very helpful. This workshop is also open to those with experience on the wheel who prefer to begin their sculptures on the wheel.
