Description
Lace up your hiking boots and come get outdoors with a Washoe County Park Ranger and special guests William A. Douglass and Carmelo Urza, Basque Studies experts!
After meeting in the May Museum parking lot, all participants will walk through the Nevada Farms and Families area to the Basque reader boards and camp wagon near Herman's Pond. William A. Douglass, generally considered one of the foremost experts in Basque Studies, will speak by the reader boards on Basque history in general, with a special emphasis on Basques in the New World. The group will then walk under McCarran through the McCarran tunnel to the Monument to the Basque Sheepherder. There, Carmelo Urza, author of "Art and Symbolism in the National Basque Monument" will speak briefly on how the monument came to be and answer relevant questions.
This interpretive, round trip hike is a moderate two miles with two stops in the first mile. The hike will begin at 4:00pm and we will meet in the May Museum parking lot at Rancho San Rafael Park.
If this sounds like fun, register here and let's hit the trail! Bring a jacket, a sturdy pair of walking shoes or hiking boots, a snack and bottle of water, and perhaps even your favorite camera.
There will be 35 attendees allowed for this hike and registration opens 30 days in advance. This program is FREE and all ages are welcome, but please leave pets at home.
